Getting Started with Bariatric Surgery

Welcome to the first step in your bariatric surgery journey with Western Surgical Group, Northern Nevada’s leader in weight loss surgery. As one of the nation’s first Bariatric Centers of Excellence and the first program of its kind in our region, we have helped thousands of patients achieve lasting weight loss and improved health. Our comprehensive process is designed to support you from your first inquiry through surgery and beyond, with expert guidance at every stage.

Your Path to Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool for treating morbid obesity and obesity‑related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and more. It’s important to understand that your journey is unique — you’ll progress through each step at your own pace with guidance from our bariatric team and patient advocates.

Step 1: Learn About Your Options

Begin by watching our free bariatric surgery seminar, available 24/7. In this video, Dr. John Ganser explains the obesity epidemic, surgical options available through our program, and what weight loss surgery entails.

Step 2: Complete the Patient Information Form

To get started formally, fill out our Patient Information Form. Or you can:

Once received, we’ll confirm if you are a bariatric surgery candidate and begin the insurance verification process (typically 3–4 business days).

Step 3: Insurance Verification

Our team will contact your insurance provider to verify coverage for bariatric procedures. Helpful procedure codes include:

  • Gastric Bypass – 43644
  • Gastric Sleeve – 43775
  • Gastric Band Removal – 43774
  • Diagnosis Code for Morbid Obesity – E66.01

Please note: it is ultimately the patient’s responsibility to understand their insurance benefits and requirements.

Step 4: Medically Supervised Weight Loss

Before surgery, patients participate in a medically supervised weight loss program. This step is not just a requirement — it helps:

  • Make surgery safer by reducing surgical risk
  • Lower complication rates
  • Reduce the size of your liver and intra‑abdominal fat

This pre‑operative preparation is covered in more detail during our Steps to Success education class.

We’re With You Every Step

Your bariatric surgery journey is more than a procedure — it’s a lifelong commitment to improved health and quality of life. Our team, including dedicated patient advocates, surgeons, nutrition specialists, and support staff, is here to answer questions, help navigate insurance requirements, and ensure you feel confident and informed at every milestone.
